From her first day in office, your next mayor will have the power to protect and expand civil liberties in St. Louis. In the first 100 days, the next mayor can:

Empower communities to limit police surveillance

      • Right now, the St. Louis police purchase and use surveillance technology to spy on St. Louis residents without your input or city board approval.

             

             The next mayor can ensure that you have a say in how police watch St. Louis by enacting legislation that requires increased                transparency, community input, and Board of Aldermen approval before the police acquire and use surveillance technology

Close the Workhouse

      • Many of the people held in the Workhouse are there because they simply could not pay bail.
      • Last year, as a result of work from local community advocates, the Board of Aldermen voted to close the Workhouse to end its inhumane conditions. 
      • The next mayor can follow through on finally closing the Workhouse by appointing a Director of Public Safety who will implement the community’s wishes.

End arrests for low-level offenses

      • Arrests and fines for low-level misdemeanors treat poverty like a crime and increase racial disparities and overcrowding in jails.
      • The next mayor can direct the St. Louis police to stop making arrests for low level offenses like begging, loitering, and prostitution. 

Increase police transparency

    • The next mayor can:
      • Direct the St. Louis police department to provide responses to sunshine requests for free.
      • Create a citywide policy that requires the disclosure of all records not required to be closed under the Sunshine Law.
      • Establish a citywide database to post publicly available documents.
